With sixty available scholarships of $2,000 each, IDSA is currently looking for eager medical students looking to further investigate their interests in Infectious Disease. Each student will be paired with a IDSA mentor for research or clinical care.

Medicine Abroad International Elective

The Medicine Abroad Program (MAP) at Saint Louis University is a scholarship that completely funds any 3rd or 4th year resident to participate in an international elective in a developing country. This grant allows residents to either find their own location or to spend one month at a site one of our resident grant recipients have gone to in the past. All the resident’s travel and local expenses are covered by this program through funds generously donated by Dr. Philip A. Riley, Jr. and Mrs. Joane Riley, and the additional contribution of Dr. Wilmott and Department of Pediatrics. This program has the strong support of the faculty and residency program director.

These are the scholarly activities required for this rotation. A one-hour noon conference must be given at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Medical Center four to six weeks after the experience is complete. Also, a scholarly activity, appropriate for the rotation site, is performed during the rotation. This might include a lecture, teaching session during rounds, an advocacy project, or an educational forum with a community group. The goal is for the resident to learn about the local medical problems, care for patients in the community and by teaching others, improved the delivery of care after the resident departs. Residents are expected to complete four modules of their choice on the Global Health Education Consortium e-learning materials. Starting in 2012-13 year residents will participate in five meetings with the other participants to prepare for their elective and process their experiences with the rest of the participants.

Dr. Tom Dooley Memorial International Elective Scholarship Program 2012-2013

The Dr. Tom Dooley Memorial International Elective Scholarship Program was established to help defray travel expenses for medical students participating in an international externship during Year 4 of the School of Medicine curriculum.

The intent of this fund is to inspire students to follow the footsteps of Dr. Tom Dooley, SLU Med. ‘53, caring for thousands of refugees in Southeast Asia. This scholarship program exists as a memorial to Dr. Dooley and his commitment by providing an opportunity for medical students to enhance their understanding of medicine in a less developed and underprivileged country. An international elective allows students the chance to broaden their clinical skills and judgment in a setting unlike the U.S. health care delivery and training system as well as achieving personal growth and enrichment through close contact with another culture.

Description: The Global Health Fellows Program (GHFP) is a five-year cooperative agreement with the U.S. Agency for International Development. GHFP seeks to improve the effectiveness of USAID population, health, and nutrition programs.
Eligibility: U.S. citizenship or permanent resident, and master or other advanced degree in public health or a related field.

Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowship for New Americans
Organization: Paul & Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans
Description: The fellowship honors and supports the graduate educations of 30 New Americans – permanent residents or naturalized citizens if born abroad; otherwise children of naturalized citizen parents -- each year with tuition and living expenses that can total as much as $90,000 over two academic years.

Description: The Albert Schweitzer Fellowship helps hundreds of graduate students each year dedicate their time and service to helping others. The Chicago Area Schweitzer Fellows Program is a one-year interdisciplinary fellowship program focused on community service, leadership development, and reflection.
Eligibility: Any student enrolled at least part-time for the 2011-2012 academic year in a health-related, graduate-level-degree-granting program in the Greater Chicago area is welcome to apply.

South American Program in HIV Prevention Research (SAPHIR)
Organization: UCLA Program in Global Health
Description: The SAPHIR program is a year-long training program in comprehensive HIV prevention research for U.S. medical students and residents. Trainees will participate in a structured program of didactic education and practical research in one of the major fields of HIV prevention (Behavioral Prevention, Biomedical Prevention, Antiretroviral Therapy, Epidemiology, or Basic/Translational Science). Research sites are located in Lima, Peru and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Eligibility: Medical students must have completed the required third-year clerkships to be eligible and may participate between the third and fourth year of medical school.  Applicants who have just completed their residency program but have not begun a fellowship may also be considered.  Language proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese is recommended and considered an asset but is not required.

NEWAID Foundation Fellowships
Organization: NEWAID Foundation
Description: The NEWAID Foundation provides research funding to public health students, encouraging their involvement with traditionally neglected infectious diseases in the developing world.
Eligibility: Current MPH students (or similar programs such as MS Epidemiology) enrolled at an accredited U.S. graduate institution. MD students and PhD students are not eligible to apply during this funding cycle, though NEWAID hopes to expand the program in the future.

Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research Training Program
Organization: National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities
Description: The MHIRT Program supports the ability of U.S. academic institutions to offer short-term international training opportunities in health disparities research for undergraduate and graduate students in the health professions who are from health disparity populations and/or are underrepresented in basic science, biomedical, clinical, or behavioral health research career field.

Infectious Diseases Society of America Medical Scholars Program
Organization: Infectious Diseases Society of America
Description: The medical scholars program provides scholarships in the amount of $2,000 to medical students to promote the subspecialty of infectious diseases by attracting the best and brightest medical students to the field. Projects must focus on pediatric or adult infectious diseases and may involve either clinical or research activities.
Eligibility: Students in any year of an accredited U.S. medical school are eligible for this award.

Global Health Service Corps
Organization: Global Health Service Corps (GHSC) represents a unique partnership between GHSC and the U.S. Peace Corps
Description: GHSC's mission is to promote and support new generations of US health professionals to serve as global health educators and work within countries facing critical human health care resource shortages. Their greater goal is, in collaboration with their partners, to create sustainable solutions to strengthen health systems.
Eligibility:  Medical volunteers will include U.S. board eligible or board certified doctors in core specialties and nursing volunteers who have completed a BNS/MPH, MSN, NP, DRN, or PHD and have a minimum number of three  years of both clinical and teaching experience.  Core specialties for doctors are expected to include Internal Medicine, Pediatrics (and Medicine/Pediatrics), Family Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, General Surgery, or Psychiatry

Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship in Public Health

Description: The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships have been established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource limited settings.  Five support centers will act as leads for consortiums of U.S. universities and administer the program.

Doris Duke International Clinical Research Fellowship
