The Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) and the KwaZulu-Natal Research Institute for Tuberculosis and HIV (K-RITH) are pleased to announce a partnership to fund medical students for a year of basic research through HHMI’s Medical Research Fellows Program. The new partnership presents a unique opportunity for students to conduct research in tuberculosis (TB) and HIV at K-RITH, a new cutting-edge research institute in Durban, South Africa.
The year-long fellowships will begin in the summer of 2013 and are open to students currently enrolled in US medical schools. Students should have previous research experience and a strong interest in infectious disease. MD/PhD students are not eligible to apply. NOTE: the application deadline for the 2013-2014 academic year is January 11, 2013.
The HHMI Medical Research Fellows Program enables medical students at schools located in the U.S. to spend a year conducting basic, translational, or applied biomedical research. HHMI and its partner organizations will award up to 77 fellowships for 2013-2014. Fellows will receive a stipend of $29,000, and allowances totaling an additional $11,000.

GHLC's Kickoff Event - An Ice Cream Social
On Thursday, September 13th, SLU's Global Health Learning Community had our kick-off event to start the 2012-2013 academic year. In hopes of educating the new incoming first year students about the numerous opportunities in global health education, the GHLC board invited both students and faculty to converse over Ted's Drews ice cream, a Saint Louis classic.

Attending faculty included Dr Wilman Ortega (Internal Medicine) who organizes an annual summer trip to Antigua, Guatemala; Dr Timothy Rice (Internal Medicine, Pediatrics) who travels to the Democratic Republic of Congo and organizes international fourth year rotations; Dr. Sharon Frey (Internal Medicine, Infectious Disease), a vaccinologist, researcher in bio-terrorism and bio-warfare, and faculty adviser for GHLC; and Dr. Dean Trevathan (Dean for the School of Public Health). |

Somali doctor and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Hawa Abdi, M.D., will visit Saint Louis University to share her fight to provide a home, school and hospital for 90,000 impoverished refugees on her family's property. The event, which is open to the general public, will take place at 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 1 at St. Francis Xavier College Church.
Abdi will talk about how she initially built her community, which started as a one-room health care clinic, nearly two decades ago. Thousands of starving and sick refugees - primarily women and children - flocked to her farmland. Abdi welcomed them and, with her two daughters who are also doctors, tended to the medical needs of community.
They also expanded the scope of services they offered to include educating, feeding and providing water to community members. Abdi and her foundation established a school, implemented sustainable farming practices and mounted an engineering program to solve problems with water and energy. The community became one of the largest camps for internationally displaced people in Somalia.
